Sunset near Aultbea
Aultbea is a small fishing village located around 44 miles from Ullapool to the north and 12 miles by road from Gairloch in Wester Ross. The village is close to Mellon Charles and to Laide. Aultbea has a pier which is used by local fishing boats, that usually fish for lobster and crabs, and leisure craft. The village has a well stocked shop as well as other stores nearby at Gairloch, Poolewe and Laide.
The village looks over Loch Ewe towards the Isle of Ewe and with the nearby beautiful beach at Mellon Udrigle you can enjoy lovely scenery as well as sandy beaches. The nearby Inverewe Garden is a local tourism attraction near Poolewe where you can see semi-tropical plants growing in the Highlands of Scotland. The plants are sheltered by the tree shelter belts around the garden and this along with the warming affect of the Gulf Stream allows plants to be grown in this area which would not normally be found this far north.
Aultbea has two hotels, the Aultbea Hotel on the shoreline of Loch Ewe, and Drumchork Lodge Hotel.
There is a number of bed and breakfast accommodation in this area as well as self-catering cottages.
The area has many small, and some larger, fresh water lochs full of wild brown trout and fishing permits can be purchased locally on a daily or weekly basis. Loch Ewe provides opportunities for sea angling. One found memory I have is from many years ago when fishing off the Aultbea Pier as a child and asking another person fishing off the pier what I should do if I caught a salmon, he carefully thought about my question and said to put it in my dad's car quickly and not tell anyone. Obviously this was not the correct legal answer but as he was the local priest I guess he gave me the answer most local people would expect and do themeselves! Sadly I did not catch a salmon that day.
